I'm starting to make bento boxes for my sister to take to work. She's a picky eater, so I have to get creative. Although I think authentic bento boxes are very cute, using Rubbermaid containers is way more practical for my sister to take to work. They can go in the dishwasher and be microwaved and they snap together!

You can put whatever you want in a bento box, this is just a video of what I put in that one.

I know some people are going to complain about me not using sushi or small grain rice here, but I don't care. Yes, long grain rice has less starch and isn't sticky enough, but I wanted to show you can form onigiri with it. I will most likely being using a higher starch rice next time for my convenience.

I am NOT a weeboo... I'm a culture nerd. I've included the Kanji and Hiragana spellings for learning purposes. Enjoy.

What is a bento?
Basically it's a Japanese lunch box with it's own style.

Oni-what?
Ongiri is a shaped ball of rice wrapped with nori. They are commonly filled with fish, pickled plums and other things. I left mine plain here, because they were eaten with the Spam.

Seriously... Spam?
Yes. I love those shape-of-can-retaining blocks of processed meat product. My family and I have always eaten Spam, but it was my Hawaiian adopted brother, Luke, who got me into mixing Spam and rice. Spam was introduced to Hawaii in the 1940's when American soldiers used it in their rations, now Hawaii consumes more Spam than any other state.

What is a furoshiki?
A furoshiki is a piece of cloth used to wrap around an object in order to transport it. Here's some common ways to fold a furoshiki:
