This 19" Midwest Products kit started out as a steam launch but was custom modified to become a very maneuverable R/C tugboat.

Incorporates a rudder system which controls steering, throttle, forward, stop and reverse functions. The propeller speed is constant and non-reversing.

A mini fog oil heater/blower provides smoke, and the radar rotates. Plans for a work barge to accompany "Choptank" are in the works.

Shot with Flip Video mino and FlyCamOne(2) in underwater capsule.

  • Great model! Nice to see the kitchen rudder getting some RC use. Must have been some tricky engineering building the parts.

  • @04023088 Thanks! And it was - the whole assembly is scratch-built.

  • have you ever thought about making full-size boat?

  • @KukleRUS1 Occasionally. :)

  • I love watching your videos they always put a smile on my face!

I dont quite understand exactly how the rudder system works though, how do you get it to reverse? does the propeller rotate or something?

  • @chizwizzler The beauty of the kitchen rudder is that the prop doesn't need to pivot, or even stop. The prop is always rotating "ahead." When reverse is needed, the kitchen rudder "closes," and the thrust from the prop is re-directed forward. To stop reversing, the rudder "opens," allowing the propeller to push water astern again, and the boat moves forward.
