Wow, I am really irritated by all the people in here who only know a little bit of Latin who think that they know that this is right or wrong. I have a master's degree in Latin. Temet is perfectly correct Latin, te (accusative second person pronoun) + met (emphatic particle).

@FeynmanFan "Timere" variated into "Temere" in vulgar Latin. In Italian it became Temere not Timere. therefore it could be that Temet is a form of late Latin for Timet. Temet Nosce doesn't really translate into anything. something like "Know he fears"... "Thy self" in Italian is "Te stesso" but also "Te Medesimo"

@crackerwv - you're too polite. "Temet" is not Latin. "Timet" is - "he fears", but that makes no sense here. The proper phrase is "nosce te ipsum", as you say. This is another example of the Matrix having knowledge and sophistication approximately two inches deep...
One other note - clearly, "nosce" is related to the original Greek "gnostos" - knowledge, from which we get "agnostic", "diagnostic", and for that matter - "gnostic."

Just a note, technically, TEMET NOSCE is a latin variation for "know thyself" but it's not really the proper use. That is more properly stated as Nosce te ipsum. TemeT, is a palindrome which means to palin-"serve" drome-a "course." Temet literally means TE MET or TRUE SELF not THY SELF. Inserting the assertion of the palin-drome into the term, you get the true meaning. Know (nosce) your own course, your true self or personal path. Do NOT let the manifestations of things OUTSIDE you be your bane.
