McCain to 14-yr-old Girl: Fair Pay Act Wouldn't Help Women

Sen. John McCain, at a 5/7/08 town hall event in Michigan, singled out a girl wearing a t-shirt critical of him and challenged her to ask him a question. She asked about the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which would have corrected the Supreme Court's destructive ruling in Ledbetter v. Goodyear: "I was wondering Senator McCain why you had the opportunity to vote to give equal rights to women equal pay [but] you didn't show up to vote and you said that if you did you wouldn't support it."

"This question should be on the minds of millions of working women who may face pay discrimination during their careers," said Kathryn Kolbert, president of People For the American Way. "Senator McCain had the perfect opportunity to embrace equal pay for equal work, but he instead parroted talking points fed to him by corporate lobbyists. It's pretty clear from his response that he's more concerned about the rights of big corporations than those of everyday Americans."

@Quarterxchange you make the same argument that Milton Friedman made but it's entirely fatuous. Do really think that we live in a world where sexism in the workplace doesn't exist? Have a look at the top fifty CEO's for your answer. Do you think it benefits a worker to have their pay cut (by them or on their behalf)? This only benefits the managers not the workforce.

Assuming that those who pay women less are sexists what would EP for EW help?

If they are forced to pay women the same amount as men, then it doesn't cost him to hire men above women for sexist reasons.

EP for EW takes away the only weapon women can fight with, the freedom to offer to work for less money and when women who offer to work for less become more skilled and experianced in their occupation, then it will cost the "sexists".

How would eliminating the statute of limitations violate the rights of the person being sued??? Just because they have gotten away with it for a longer period of time, then they shouldn't be held accountable? I don't understand statute of limitations. OMG shes like my bestest friend so she is awesome!!! grow a brain and maybe you will realize that he did answer the question. you can't simplify a bill like she tried to do. bills get disguised all the time as being for women's rights, or minority rights, or for poor people, when all they do is empower special interest groups. mccain saw that this would help trial lawyers (the scum of the earth) and voted against it.
