  • Guys - this whole discussion of tune is the very worst kind of musical pedantry that misses the entire point. It sounds in tune to me, but who the hell gives a damn. The power, the musicality, the depth of feeling, the pure emotion and joy of being a human being.

This is what it's all about isn't it? And it's why Mr Elling is peerless.

  • I, like many of you, am blown away at this musical theater lover's appalling view of Kurt's talents. I just saw him live on Thursday, for the 4th time... he is amazing. I am a vocalist and also a pianist, and perhaps this person simply is not familiar with the use of the entire chromatic scale verses the major scale. He is never off. I have even seen him go off by himself for several minutes of improvisation and still be right in tune when the band comes back in.

  • @drongovids Also, I did not hear the aug4 interval (as in "Maria" no?) and not a scale run either. Please do not try to compare to me. You are wrong and do not hear.

  • @drongovids "West Side Story" is GREAT! Kurt Elling would never audition, though, because he would never be cast! NEVER! Ha, ha! Not in a hundred centuries! What I say is the TRUTH! What you say is ridiculous! Broadway singers hit pitches MUCH better than Mr. Kurt Elling! It is not close! That is a big laugh to compare a hack like Kurt Elling to talent on Broadway! Ha, ha! I will still laugh at music ignorance like that for days and days!

  • @atpal he's not off-key at all. maybe you were thrown off by the augmented 4th in a major scale run? I bet you don't like West Side Story either...

  • I just took a tuner to it. He hit a B right on and was a little bit sharp on an Ab

  • Saw this guy in Stockton for a jazz festival. :)

  • How anyone could listen to Elling's final note on "Lush LIfe" and even moot the possibility that he could ever be off key is utterly beyond me. I have just been to his Nov 2 Sydney concert and the hairs are still standing on the back of my neck. His virtuosic grasp of pitch and nuance and harmonic resolution is virtually unparalleled amongst jazz vocalists living today.

  • @atpal .....Please ask your Mother to give you a `Firm Whack `to the back of your head....You sound like a precocious little brat...and you are WRONG...Don`t Knock Kurt Elling on my watch....Now off you go and sit in the corner and meditate on how to be more open-minded...You will be much happier by being less critical..!!
