Comparing Burton to entwistle on a technical level is obviously preposterous, but why the hostility? I certainly don't hate Burton. At most, I just feel bad for fans with such stunted development in their musical tastes that they never made it past Metallica. Even if thrash is your thing, time has not been kind to Metallica, and has proven Slayer, exodus. and even Megadeth as far more praiseworthy.

We're not talking about the Who. We're not talking about drummers. We're talking about Entwistle and Burton. I don't deny that part of the reason Entwistle gets overlooked is because of his band. And if you prefer substance to your drummers, then I prefer substance to my bassists instead of drunk clowns like Burton and his band Alcoholica.

I only mentioned Geezer because everyone wrongly credits Clifford with using the wah-wah pedal on the bass before anyone else. Wrong. Geezer was the first. Geezer was also one of the first heavy metal bassists not play linear bass lines (playing along to the rhythm guitar). Yes, I agree that their styles are different, and I'm not equating them to one another. I would never insult Geezer Butler that way.

Yes, because we all know how credible Flea is. And he just happened to say that at a festival where everyone in attendance was there to kiss Metallica's ass. No thank you. If you value showmanship over talent, that's fine. It's sad, but that's okay I guess. Doesn't change the fact that Clifford was a subpar bassist at best. And if you think bass solos are "self-indulgent," then what the hell are you doing here watching an Entwistle solo?

I'm not saying Cliff is more technical. I'm not saying he's more revolutionary. But his style was honest and always sounds great to me :) I'd have to agree more with what Flea who said. "In rock music most bass solos are self indulgent, overly technical, show off'y, and a bit boring. Every Cliff Burton solo Ive heard is a soulful and head-banging experience that gets the house rocking. Played by a an awesome rocker of a young man, a masterpiece of a human being. "
