Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers
Roadrunner, Roadrunner The Beserkley Collection
Richmans influences are obvious from the outset: shambolic Velvets-style rocknroll fused with tinges of doo-wop and sweet melodies reminiscent of the Beach Boys.
These influences pale in significance however, when compared to the massive list of performers who took their cues from him.
Anyone who ever dared to challenge the balls-out machismo of the atypical rock idol has Jonathan to look up to.

  • This band rocked. Jonathan came to town one night. I got all drunk and jumped on the stage. Jonathan put his hand on my shoulder, talked to me and knew I was just a drunken admirer. He was so cool.

He played an incredible rendition of some classic song (forget the name) on sax. Jonathan and his band were incredible.

They are/were one of the great raw rock bands.

  • @stoprejectingmynames It's all the more unfair as The Modern Lovers' debut is among the most important albums of the seventies!

  • sometimes on new youtube i cant find volume control to TUUURRRNNNN ITT UUIUUPUPUP!!!!!!

  • @ZephyrOrDie Heh, I was gonna tell him it was May Ranzarek just to further his confusion, but I've been drinking...

  • @dowcushmanclark Its Ray Manzarek.

  • This song is exactly what I'm going through right now. Waking up at 3am craving for -- well, you know what :D with an important person. DAYUM

  • @davidbyrne77 You got that right. The comparision to Ray Kazmarek (sp) with the Doors is very apt. I also hear Al Kooper on Highway 61.

  • Sounds a lot like a Doors song with the keyboard. Great Keyboard work. Jerry harrison is underrated.
