One of the all-time great sports announcers was Andy Musser, the voice of the Philadelphia Phillies for over a quarter century. What few people knew at the time was that Andy was a devotee of craft beer and developed a friendship with Fritz Maytag, president of Anchor Brewing. In his retirement from the sports scene, Andy has gone to work for Anchor and represents the company at many events. As we talk with Andy, be sure to check out a very special piece of jewelry he's wearing, one that was only issued in 1980... until this year, that is!
@all66books - WCAU must have danced around the dial. I just looked in my June 14, 1940 copy of the Philadelphia Daily News ("Nazis in PARIS" was the headline - I got the paper out of my great-aunt's collection after she passed away at age 92 in 2005), and the radio listings (as important as today's TV listings) had WCAU on 1170 AM. I don't know where they were in 1969.

@AshburnStadium My memory might be playing tricks on me - after all, I'm talking about 1969. Kind of a long story, but I didn't listen to the station after that year. Maybe someone could find out if the broadcast frequency was the same in '69.

I like to hear that someone in sports or entertainment makes a living in something else that he's passionate about.
As I more or less said elsewhere, I must have bad genes because so far, I can't stand the taste of beer. Aroma's one thing, taste is another. Thanks for explaining the peculiar name of Anchor Steam though.
Glad you took every mug for what they were worth, since as far as we know, in heaven there is no beer(groan--if there's wine you'll have to change gears).

@all66books - WCAU-530?? I thought WCAU-AM was always on 1210.

@tricorn1776 - No, you are very wrong, unless you love Chris "Wheels" Wheeler. He is universally hated as the worst announcer in recent Phillies history. I love to joke that Wheels was born the very same day that Nagasaki was nuked (yes, he was born on August 9, 1945). Rest in peace, Andy, and I hope you are reunited with Harry Kalas and Richie Ashburn (whom I honor with my screen name) in Heaven's broadcast booth. Andy was 74, only 4 years older than Whitey, and 1 more than HK.

Great to hear Andy Musser again, as familiar and comfortable as an old pair of jeans. I'm happy to see him looking well.
