In partnership with http://AllFreeKnitting.com and http://www.chemknits.com I am pleased to present this video about how to create dye a gradient of color on wool yarn with food coloring and vinegar in the comfort of your own kitchen. The method illustrated in this video is dip dyeing, where you all some of the yarn to remain in the dyebath longer than others, creating darker colors.

Thanks for the reply! I'm going to do it today. I also knitted up a long 5 inch swatch with several needle sizes and I am considering knitting with the undyed wool and then dip dyeing when finished. Also, it may be interesting to have two pots with contrasting colors and to fold and dip a piece of knitted fabric into the second pot for an opposite color spectrum and see what happens. Just a test. I can even use an old sweater to test this out. I'll take pictures as I do it.

@theonlysuz The larger you make your skein, the more space there will be between color changes. (You can make a skein that is yards long by arranging chairs to wrap the yarn around.) I did this sample using a mini skein. I have never tried to make self striping yarn, but the process for a larger skein would be similar as the sample that I showed above.
If I have a project in mind, I would dye all of the yarn I was going to use at the same time. Hope this helps. -Rebecca of ChemKnits

Also, how do you measure how many yards of the color will go to the darkest and then how much gradually lighten etc. - Do you wind the yarn into lengths to do that? Like spools of 5 yds each or 10 or whatever you need for a particular project, knowing in advance how you need the gradient to fill the space?

@svyet13 As you knit, the color will go gradually from dark to light back to dark again (so yes, it switches back and forth). If you start with a really long skein, then you will end up with larger stripes. (Try wrapping the yarn around a few chairs to make it really long.)

Thank you so much for posting this! I do have a question, however. How does this knit up? Does it steadily get darker, or does it switch back and forth? Thanks!
