@sohigh2 I think this decision is a musical one. If the tenor takes over (an octave higher) where else could Elvis go without doubling someone else's part? So he stayed with his original part, only backing off a bit to allow the tenor to be featured. Regarding Elvis's alleged inability to sing harmony, while it may have been true early on when he attempted to join the Songfellows he could in fact handle a harmony line and did so on some his own records (overdubbed).
