Great Video, but I wish there was some way of having it safely go past something to give it a sense of how fast it is. (Maybe a little bit of text saying how fast that little speed boat is going in the background?)

The boat was tested on SD harbor and the cup was raced in Valencia Spain.

There is an engine on board USA 17 in order to trim the massive 238 foot tall rigid wing sail. The wing on USA 17 is the largest wing ever constructed even in the aviation industry. Its a remarkable piece of technology that BMW should be extremely proud of being a part of.

LOL - the comments from non sailors are quite hilarious.
Yes the hulls do "Fly" a sailboat is lifted by its sail and so always carries itself at a heel. The windward two hulls on USA 17 are always out of the water- drastically decreasing the hydrodynamic drag and making the boat very fast.

Without soul? That boat just exudes excitement. Heck - the umpire chase boat (motor boats) blew out an engine and caught on fire while trying to keep up with the boat. USA 17 hit 34 knots of boatspeed in less than 12 knots of wind. Thats truly EFFICIENTdynamics. My next vehicle will be a BMW.
