The AT-101 is a faithful recreation of the original Fairchild 670 stereo limiter. The AT-101 is built using traditional point-to-point wiring methods and standard turret component mounts. The audio path and power supply are completely free from any printed circuit boards. The AT-101 like the original Fairchild 670 has been assembled completely by hand and uses high quality modern components. The tube complement is exactly the same, using a new generation 6386 remote cut-off triode developed to replace the original 50 year old tube types many of which were used in the Fairchild 670.

Interview courtesy of Ronan's Recording Show during the Oct 2009 AES Convention in New York City.

The 660/670 limiter was designed by Rein Narma, who built the first 10 mono units by himself, the first one was made for Rudy Van Gelder a recording engineer specializing in jazz, Rein later built a recording console for him. The second 660 was sold to Olmstead Recording in New York and then the third to Mary Ford and husband Les Paul. Rein worked at Gotham Recording and then formed Gotham Audio Development Corp with others. He built new amplifiers for the Ampex 300 for a new product range for Gotham Audio. It was at that time Les Paul heard of Rein.

  • @dkillian12: Hi, how are you? If you are interested in the originals as a collector that may make sense. But good luck If you are interested in having a unit that sounds the way they were supposed to sound fresh from production. The problem with the originals is that you have to find one that is in pristine condition. That is very difficult as all Fairchild 670's are 40 years old or more. I don't want to get into a pie fight with you but your comment as to it being too expensive is naive.

  • Thanks Ronan! The clip turned out fantastic.
