The Lovetones were Motown's male backing vocal group in the early days, a sort of male answer to The Andantes. Founding member Stan Braceley was still in the group when we recorded them in 1989 in Detroit, and their harmonies were oh so tight, and so classic Detroit, that Sylvia Moy wrote one of her best ever pieces of pseudo-Motown, the scintillating, stomping, outrageously careering "Fire Alarm". Stan brought in lead singer Buford Glanton, who had been lead singer of classic Detroit group The Tempos (not to be confused with the Los Angeles group formed by Bobby Saunders). Buford "Fab" Glanton went on to co-write many sings with me for The Elgins and The Lovetones, and we ended up releasing an entire album on The Lovetones, called "Turn This Heart Around". Eventually, "Fire Alarm" became such a big Northern Soul record that we brought the group in to England, to perform it at a soul weekender in Torquay in 1991. Eventually we remixed and improved it for a featured slot in our documentary DVD box set, "The Strange World Of Northern Soul". A couple of these original members have sadly passed on since this video was shot, sixteen years ago.

  • Are any of these Love-Tones the ones who sang with MARY WELLS?Mary thought one of them had been killed in a car wreck after she left Motown.

  • Yes of course. Stan Braceley, the guy on the left, was the remaining living original member who sang with Mary Wells. He reformed the group.

  • This in Northern Soul at it's very purest, how it should be, it should be played at every Northern Soul venue around the world. It is the very essence of Northern Soul. Who gives fuck what year it was made or who the producer was, it's just great great music.

    Peace from San Francisco

    Roger Imhada.

  • God help me i can't stop watching this video , this without a doubt should be played more often on The Northern scene and Bollocks to the Soul police or anti Levine idiots .

going to play it tomorrow night without a doubt.

Ian should be so bloody proud of this track.

  • Just spoke to Fabb , He loves The video , he tells me you have called him and speaks highly of your Dad , I'm glad Ian put this Video up on here so we can all see 4 fantastic singers

  • Why do so many people who claim to love Northern Soul not accept wonderful records like this one ??

  • It was on a CD album called "You Didn't Say A Word", released on Goldmine in 2000. It's long deleted, but Amazon still have it.
