The Tata group is working round-the-clock to ensure that it is able to reopen the tower wing of the devastated Taj Hotel - which houses
the well-known mediterranean restaurant `Souk' and private club `Chambers' - by Christmas time.

This part of the hotel which was constructed later - hasn't been as badly damaged as the landmark heritage wing in last month's terror attacks. The heritage wing, which would take months to get back into shape, was built in 1903, reportedly for pound 500,000, and has played host to maharajas, presidents, CEOs and celebrities.

The property has about 2,000 employees and group chairman Ratan Tata, along with vice chairman R K Krishna Kumar, is overseeing a team which is racing to refurbish and reopen the hotel sometime during the Christmas holidays.

TOI had also reported that Trident is planning to open its doors by December 21. South Mumbai's Taj hotel, which faces the Arabian Sea and has the Gateway of India as its neighbour, is the flagship property of the Rs 1,823-crore Indian Hotels Company and contributes about Rs 300 crore to its revenues.

Although there is no official estimate of the damages incurred by the hotel, various reports suggest that restoration could cost over Rs 500 crore. The facade of the rebuilt Taj is expected to look pretty much the way it always has, since Heritage regulations don't allow for modifications of the exterior. However, the interiors could look different.

The Taj group has taken out an insurance for both the building complex as well as business interruption. Tata AIG General Insurance is the leading insurer while ICICI Lombard and IFFCO Tokio General Insurance are co-insurers. There are about 339 rooms in the tower wing while the heritage section has 200 of the more expensive rooms and suites.
