Turn a plastic trash can into a rainwater storage barrel by adding a spigot to hook a hose up to the barrel for irrigation or watering. A parts list can be found at http://www.mikesgardenblog.com/making-rain-barrel.php?pagename=making-rain-ba...

  • THANK YOU!! I've been looking for a simple explanation about how to attach a spigot to a plastic barrel, and you answered that very nicely.

  • WOW! Love this nice, simple and CHEAP idea for a rain barrel. Even I could do this! Thanks Mike!

  • great video Mike!

  • won't it leak?

  • Thanks! I am making some this weekend!

  • you put the teflon tape on backwards. it should go on the opposit way so that it doesnt come off when tightening..

  • great video,

It works well in areas where it rains more throughout the year.

I am thinking in building an underground watertank to store lots of rainwater as we have a dry season of nearly 6 months.

    Regards from Mexico

  • That broke down the steps in an easy and simple manner. I can't wait to make my own rain barrels!

  • Well done! Thanks for making everything so clear. This definitely beats paying $175 for a rain barrel. I'm going to make my own. Thanks so much!

  • WONDERFUL!!!

  • Food grade, clean, 55 gallon barrels in Miami can be had for about 30 bucks. I bungee cord a piece of my pool screening or window screening across the top of a topless barrel to filter out dirt, twigs, bird droppings and mosquitos. I have had good success with just the teflon tape and the snug spigot so far and havent needed a bolt on the inside yet, altho I can see how it would stabilize the spigot very well. Simplicity is my goal. Is painting it a good idea?
