Touring The Forbidden City! Remember that the Ming and Qing Dynasty Emperors lived here and used the entire area. It was built between 1406 and 1420 by a vast amount of laborers that worked exclusively for the Emperor's purpose. There are 9,999 total rooms in the Forbidden City. If you haven't seen it, watch the movie, The Last Emperor, which was filmed in large part within this area.

An interesting side note is that Mao Zedong and high-ranking communists looked into the notion of destroying the Forbidden City to remove what he considered archaic Chinese imperial culture, thankfully he never carried through with that.

  • There're vendors selling things like jewelry for 5 bucks. watch out! Don't buy those poor quality stuff. 4:38 Emperor's Concubines's daily life are displayed in both side corridors.I found it's very interesting to say what their life is all about.

  • I had a 1 day tour in forbidden city last christmas when I came back to China.. It's unbelievable huge.. Only half of the palace was open to public that day coz there was some foreign VIP having a visit at the same time..
