THE ITALIAN OPERA - IL BEL CANTO
The bel canto opera movement flourished in the early 19th century and is exemplified by the operas of Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, Pacini, Mercadante and many others. Literally "beautiful singing", bel canto opera derives from the Italian stylistic singing school of the same name. Bel canto lines are typically florid and intricate, requiring supreme agility and pitch control. The bel canto era style was rapidly popularized by Giuseppe Verdi, beginning with his biblical opera Nabucco. Verdi's operas resonated with the growing spirit of Italian nationalism in the post-Napoleonic era, and he quickly became an icon of the patriotic movement (although his own politics were perhaps not quite so radical). In the early 1850s, Verdi produced his three most popular operas: Rigoletto, Il trovatore and La traviata. But he continued to develop his style, composing perhaps the greatest French Grand opera, Don Carlos, and ending his career with two Shakespeare-inspired works, Otello and Falstaff, which reveal how far Italian opera had grown in sophistication since the early 19th century. After Verdi, the sentimental "realistic" melodrama of verismo appeared in Italy. This was a style introduced by Pietro Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana and Ruggiero Leoncavallo's Pagliacci that came virtually to dominate the world's opera stages with such popular works as Giacomo Puccini's La Boheme, Tosca, and Madama Butterfly. Later Italian composers, such as Berio and Nono, have experimented with modernism

  • I have a question, I am baritone, if I practice tenor notes can I reach and become a tenor or I will still be a baritone?

  • The notes are the same for tenor and baritone, it changes just your voice tone. If you can sing with tenor tone... maybe you're a tenor... Many people don't know what kind of voice they have. Only a Maestro can tell you that

  • @235binelli - true to a point. Tonality is partly responsible for range but so is support and the ability to take the weight out of the voice. Singing in a tenor tone will not give someone more vocal range.

"Only a Maestro can tell you that" - well that's just silly. What kind of voice you have/given/born with is meaningless unless you like being boxed in a certain vocal range.

  • Hello Kevin, Oh yes, In Italy we call "Bel Canto Techniques" each technique it depends of your "Voice Customized program"... I would said a "Real Italian Bel Canto Maestro" to define your Real voice.

  • @235binelli - OK point taken. Real Maestro can determine what voice someone has but so can any teacher with a good understanding of voice technique.

But I see what you are saying. I'm sure its much different in Italy as it is here in the US in regards to singing teachers.

  • Yes Sir, there are some differences between American an Italian teachers, that's the reason why it's more beautiful. Thanks for your kind comments

  • If you are a tenor and have passed the E , F , F# but can´t go any further its because you have "pulled" chest voice beyond the confortable and natural limit. Every note higher will be difficult and have strain. A new muscle coordination needs to be obtained, transfering the weight of the voice by adding natural resonances and mixing them naturally. For example the Pharyngeal resonator its VITAL to cross your bridge and let go of the weight.¡¡¡

  • @deadfall000 You can't change the tesiture you're born with, if you try tenor notes inadequatly you'll end messing up your vocals, but as the guy below said, only a Maestro can tell wich tesiture you are. TL;DR you will stay baritone.

  • @deadfall000 Figuring out your classification is a vocal journey every singer must take. There are a lot of men who have to work really hard for their high ranges but are actually tenors lacking proper technique. The goal is to study for many many years with good teachers and work hard on liberating your voice and accessing its entire potential. It's then you will start to see what repertoire you should be singing. Your classification's dependent on a lot of things a teacher has to guide you on.

  • the best singing teacher on the internet. I have singing lessons in portugal (i'm portuguese) and my teacher, she's from bulgaria, and she is a professional singer, (her method is "bel canto" also).

  • @deadfall000 you will always be a baritone at heart but if you practice and really think about it what is baritone but a mens tenor when you get into a chior of 3 parts its not saprano alto tenor its saprano alto baritone. but i am a baritone singer but i also can sing bass and i can sing tenor alto and some saprano so as long as you work for it you can do anything with your voice keep in mind it takes many months if not years to develop a higher or lower voice its just practice.

  • I think the hook up about singing tenor is caused by the singing of men today in the POP scene. They are so high that it make them sound very forced. There´s a few male voices today in the POP who are good to lsiten to. I think tihis is a very big problem. Beacause not all of them are tenors

  • @235binelli Very true my husband always belived he was a tenor but when he study to be master in acting the vocalteacher learnd him to find out that he was a low Base voice. True story from life

  • @deadfall000

To answer your question simply yes you can achieve higher registers. Tenor or Baritone Alto or Soprano, are just names used to describe where a particular singer feels most comfortable singing. It in no way means you cannot sing in higher registers :)

  • Cool Cool Cool

  • @nectenorboi09 it's everyone's nightmare
