Apologies for the sound quality.. I recently converted this to digital from a homemade cassette recording done about 20 years ago.

  • Yeah! I want the Bessie Smith version too.

Hey, isn't that photo of Bessie?

  • Yes sorry about that - when I uploaded the video I was mistakenly under the impression Bessie Smith was the singer...

  • Could this be Ottilie Paterson? I'd appreciate a comment or two from those in the know!

  • thanks 18111! To be honest i cant be sure it is Bessie Smith, i didnt record the original tape this came from and it had no track listing.. I have just done my best with what little knowledge i have gained on the web to identify the tracks i have posted. If anyone thinks they can identify this song as being sung by somebody else, please let me know!

  • @kershaw991 A beautiful voice and a lovely lady. Sadly missed by me especially. My great aunt and a great inspiration to my music.

  • @sunglassesron53 , Classic touch of Ottilie patterson Beautiful Voice,

  • Classic Ottilie Patterson, Brilliant , Thanks for posting

  • @oulgundog I was so sorry that Otillie had passed away. Over the years I lost sight of her, and whether she was still performing. She was a friend, and we would share a beer or two at the 100 club in Oxford Street. I still have a vivid picture of her in my mind when I recall her first stage apearance in Croydon. That small framed woman with that huge voice, magic! Thank goodness we still have records of her.

  • Yes Otillie was Interred in Comber (Co Down)just a few miles up the road from me .. she was great.. a legend.

  • @zoliloquio ottilie sadly died on mon 20th june in an ayr care home, was front page news story in ayrshire post dated july 1st.

  • @zoliloquio Ottilie is retired, living in Scotland. She plays classical piano now. I watched her and loved her blues right from when she first started, before she married Chris Barber.

    jphar.

  • thought that Ottilie changed alot but Bessie was great.

  • If there were any doubts about who was singing just listen to the backing band particularly the trombone/ Ottilie is great but she would tell you that Bessie was the Queen.

  • Who said white, middle class Irish women can't sing the blues?
