Down in Venice around December I started drawing daily, often ending in exercises of futility, but at least to draw one piece a day was the plan. I wondered after awhile what subject would be cool to delve into. One day I saw a group of old sailing ships passing along the horizon line off the pier. After they passed into the oblivion of the day and disappeared, I headed to a local cafe to draw. What came out of that first day were these different styled sailing ships. Almost in many ways obsessively drawn the same but totally different. Three sails often. Quite a few of these I collaborated with my father Ernest Anders. He loved working on them, as he is known to work only in pencil, he would sketch out in graphite and I would finish in ink and a wash. Each rendering different, but so similar that a theme built. Here you can see the possibilities and the sounds of the sea and the great voice of Devendra Banhart take you out to the mysterious ocean blue off the land's off oblivion...3/08..Mark Erickson
