A pair of 2 day old Killdeer chicks rescued from a busy street after two of their siblings were run over. Killdeer chicks are extremely hard to keep in captivity. We're not going to try to raise them. We are just holding them until Wildlife Rescue comes to pick them up. Adorable aren't they?

  • I spotted some of these cuties a few years ago, and only got two blurry photos of them. The parents were doing the "injured bird" act. They have to be some of the cutest baby birds out there!! I hope they did OK...

  • Yes, they both survived.

It took a couple of days for the Wildlife Rescue Center to pick them up and in the meantime my wife setup a fenced-in area on the frontporch and taught them to eat mealworms and crickets by "pecking" at them with her finger like she was eating.

It took about 6 hours of working with them on and off before they finally got the idea.

We kept in touch with the Wildlife Center to follow their progress until they grew-up and were released.

  • Should it perhaps be spelled 'kildeer', with one L?

    Thanks for the video!

  • I thought so too at first but Googled it to be sure it was two L's.

  • The three I am caring for do the exact same thing, run against the glass XD

I have to feed them though, because the zoo I work as is rehabbing them. They are definitely not easy to care for :P

  • I want your job... definitely not for the pay I'm sure, but for the experience. lol

  • aww... theres a couple living next to my mom's house and when ever I can I go and look at them. When the parents make an alarm they run away with the tiny wings out and its SO CUTE to hear the chirp.

  • LOL i have a killdeer baby bird but all it does is chirp

  • @desertdarlene I would love to work in a wildlife rescue agency, but I am too allergic to many of the animals. Luckily, though, in my area, they don't have a lot of killdeer chicks come in.

  • That one seemed kinda stressed out, but the other is nice and calm, lol. From your set-up and your comments, I see that you are experienced with these birds. I'm glad they both lived, were raised together, and you got them to eat. That's often a challenge--getting them to eat in captivity. They often get so stressed that they won't eat or drink anything.

Have you or anyone else tried bloodworms with these chicks? I hear those are good for "hard cases".

  • it's not bad for a summer job :P

2 of the 3 survived and they are now almost full-sized and in an outdoor enclosure. They are so much less work once they start eating on their own!
