Speaks of her experience seeking help and wondering whether counsellors are sympathetic to women's psychological state.
Encouraging women, who seek economic independence, to go on welfare creates feelings of dependence and a sense they are sliding down instead of climbing up.
The services are not individualized enough and there are not enough services for the social need. There are not enough spaces in the shelters.
Counsellors should start by providing support rather than advice.
Women do not always feel safe in the shelter environment. As well, women who own their own home may not want to leave their home.
Women who have teenage boys cannot access most shelters if they want to bring their boys away from the abusive partner.
Follow-up is important to provide support and external validation.
The problem for you is that you have a much higher than average intelligence. This means that most of the "workers in the system" will make little sense to you. Also, "the system" is shonky at best. You are the type of person who should study and enter the system as a leader. Until you do that, you will only experiance frustration. It's either join them to lead them, or abandon it altogether for your sanitys' sake.
