From 1910 here is a very young, virtually unknown Sophie Tucker stepping up to the Edison recording horn with one of her very first recordings in what would become a more than 50 year recording career! Here she is on an early 2 minute Edison wax cylinder with "Reuben Rag". Sophie Tucker (1884-1966), amazingly, would eventually be one of the very few pioneers of recording to appear on live television. Her very few Edison 2 minute wax cylinders sold poorly and are extremely difficult to find today - particularly in good playing condition as the primitive wax compound used by Edison was very susceptible to mold which destroys the cylinder grooves. I decided to play this on one of my Edison Triumphs.. It's just as hefty as I remembered last time I moved it. : ) Thanks for stopping in for a visit and I hope you enjoy this early Sophie Tucker recording.

  • @agesagomusic08 Thanks! I like to include little extras in my videos when I can and I enjoy Sophie's early material. Thanks again. I enjoy the videos on your channel as well!

  • That machine must have cost you a fortune. But note $50.00 back then was not cheap. Probably the equivalent of $500.00 now.

  • @WinterHaven I paid considerably more than five hundred dollars for this particular Edison Triumph as the condition was excellent and I was happy to find it. Thanks for your comments!

  • It's interesting that modern machines with electrical processing of the groove soundtrack are used. I always play my shellac prizes on modern stereo equipment !

By the way, my father did not like Sophie Tucker and didn't watch Ed Sullivan one night when he was honoring her.

  • No thanks re: the Sophie recording. But the Triumph is a great beauty! That's the kind I dream of having, along with that style of horn. Do you ever record with your Triumph?

  • NICE! great sophie tucker cylinder and nicely done on the vid!
