"Global Warming: The Future of Our Planet"

Lisa Labadie -Director
Erika Dyke -Cinematographer
Matt Owens -Computer Wrangler
Brent Kauffman -Key Grip
Michael Vespremi -Storyboarder
Year: 2000

This student-made documentary film from the Lyman Briggs College explores the topic of global warming in 2000. The film-makers [Fab Fiver Productions] wrote: "This film represents part of the primary project associated with the LBS 492 Senior Seminar course, as taught by Dr. Luckie during fall of 2000 at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. This course was unique in that, instead of a final thesis paper, we were required to create and publish online a video on our topic. In our video, we were required to take a current scientific debate, determine what the media and public opinion regarding it was, and then debunk any myths we come across using scientific resources. For out topic, we chose Global Warming, and more specifically, how human greenhouse gas emissions contrubute to it."

Interestingly, the undergraduate science majors were not able to fully commit to the "concern" and were somewhat swayed by the industry's campaign called the "greening hypothesis." They also made great efforts to interview Senator Diane Byrum but did not succeed and eventually had to substitute a 'student journalist' in the end of the film.

Experts interviewed include: Dr. Marcos Dantus, Dr. Jim Hoeschele, and Dr. Anne McLaren.

This film was created as part of a senior thesis research project in a course at Michigan State University. Learn more here: http://www.msu.edu/course/lbs/492/luckie

  • @2289567 Yes. Climate change doesn't mean we can't have a cold year, or many. But a change in the averages. Change the average temperature of a human body by a few degrees and you die. Change sea temperature by 4 degrees and all coral reefs die. The ice from the artic will melt during the summer, causing the extinction of many animals. Nothing is certain, but the evidence is very frightening. No one wants to believe it, including me, but I cannot wish facts and evidence away.

  • @gorescam Great questions. But don't call scientists Environuts. That's very demeaning. You don't call your mechanic a motonut. Knowing evidence doesn't make you nutty, only concerned about every one around us.

The vast majority of CO2 is from Nature. But nature works in balance. How much weight do you need to tip a scale? In the past not much by ice core readings. Take ice from Greenland and antartica, and they match. We know that we are emitting amounts of Co2 to cause another shift.

  • @Palmoni44 Stop buying house insurance. Your house will not go on fire! Besides, fires occur all the time naturally, no reason to blame a possible house fire on people. We buy insurance and hope we never use it. But the risk remains. The consequences of Global warming are statistically (based on scientific evidence) much higher than the odds of a single fire in any one house. But we cannot ignore the risk! To do so is just foolish. Calling scientists environuts is very bigotted.

  • Environuts, you guys believe in evolution, right? Then if you guys are right (and you're not) then it's simply our time as a speies to go extinct. Oh well! The planet will survive so stop trying to save it. A new age will begin without the horrible humans or U.S. to mess it up. You're free at last! ENJOY IT!!

  • Environuts, Answer these questions please:

What % of the atmosphere is made up of CO2?

What % of CO2 is naturally occurring?

What % of CO2 is man made?

What is the largest source of methane gas?

What is the most abundant greenhouse gas? (the one thats never factored.)

What do these environmental computer simulations show when humans are completely removed from the simulations?

  • Ah yes, the beloved trio of arguments by disputers: it's getting colder in some places, climate variation has always been natural in the past, and therefore it is impossible for people to affect world climate, and (my personal favorite), other gases occur in greater volumes than CO2. I like to think of that last one as equivalent to saying, "Sure, my blood-alcohol level is .2, but that means itsh waaaaayy outnumbered by blood, right?" (passes out).

  • Why don't you listen to someone not sponsored by the fossil fuel lobby? Or maybe, have a little faith in an organization endorsed by every major scientific body on the planet?

  • It has risen less then half a degree

  • Funny, I live in Idaho and I haven't seen a winter this cold for years.

  • every video about glabal warming shows fantastic images of hurricanes and ice caps melting...like these have NEVER BEFORE IN HISTORY OCCURED!

please do some research. without the facts behind the natural variation in planetary climate, you are reduced to having faith in Al Gore or the I.P.C.C.

Global Warming has become your religion.
