"Rich mixture","bad smoke"-nonsense,radials have lots of oil in the lower cylinders at startup,it just has to burn off.

@frima666 When I wake up in the morning, I make more stink than that. This was a nice video. It's always nice to watch an engine wake up.

Can I get a alarm clock that duplicates this sound?
I love it!

Thank you. Made my day......

This is very good video. I did preserved automatic transmission parts in oil, never came up to my head, that aircraft engines could have the same treatment. It is just like we use to say, you'll never end learning things. Thanks for this video, oh, sound is nice!!!

Not to mention these engines always poured some smoke when cold.
I remember seeing a spring "out of the mothballs" (depreservation) startup where I lost sifgt of the airplane (the #231 if I recall, maybe the #236) from the wings back, apart from the tip of the tail... It was, for a brief time, in it's own smoke cloud.

when u say high blower removed do you mean a second speed supecharger or turbo? i only ask because the Merlin is supercharged and has a two speed supercharger and is also a similar type to the one fitted to the United Kngdoms most unreliable race car the BRM V16

Frim, MERCI de poster ce vidéo!!! I'm a regular spotter @ CYQB (which I supposed is where all of those old ladies are stored). The other day, I was at the edge of rwy 24 and you guys were in the process of de-storing one of those CL-215s. Incidentally, I took a series of photos of C-FTXG on approach (rwy06) today, which is why I searched for this. Écoute pas les tatas de YouTube qui disent que les moteurs sont finis... s'ils volent encore (et sans fumée), c'est que du monde s'en occupent bien.

what are those 3350's?

I saw two of these come back to the field with unused retardant; one dropped it coming towards (but a long way from) us and then went overhead at WOT... I still shiver at the thought of that sound.

I absolutely love the roar of radial engines. I noticed the blades being counted, don't you do so to clear any oil from the cylinders? I also heard the clutch engage right after the engine turned over.

To all the great mecanics out there;
This engine as just been taking out of Winter preservation, that mean the engine was, at fall time, stalled in preservation oil. So in spring time at first run up, smoke is everywhere and every Color you can imagine.
So stop those theory of bad this an bad that it's only depreservation run-up. Engine runs good, and no injectors were hurt during the run-up ;))))!

Those engines need some maintenance. Grey smoke is fine, but when it starts turning black and leaving streaks on the wings, there's a problem.
