UPDATE - January 25, 2010 - text courtesy of http://cp24.com Toronto Crime Stoppers Media Partner.
Toronto police have narrowed the search for a man believed to be responsible for assaulting and robbing and 81-year-old grandmother in Toronto last fall.
Police say the suspect is 54-year-old Richard Earl Rupert, and he allegedly responsible for dozens of similar thefts. Police say the suspect operates by befriending seniors.
The attack on the senior last November was caught on surveillance video. The suspect gained the trust of the woman, convinced her to withdraw money from an ATM, and then robbed her.
Police say they believe there have been 20 other victims in Ontario alone, ranging in age from 78 to 95 years old. Some of the thefts date back to 1999.
Investigators have issued a Canada-wide warrant for Ruperts arrest and have charged him with multiple counts of robbery, break and enter, fraud and theft.
He is described as white, five-foot-six, and 140 to 160 pounds, with short, dirty blonde/grey hair and a receding hairline. He has a reddish complexion with chiselled cheekbones, hazel eyes and is usually clean-shaven.
Anyone with information is asked to call investigators 416-808-3200 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416−222−TIPS.
