Actually this song was written showing their opposition to the thatcher government, the depletion of british industry (the bike reference) and RACISM! The Clash were very left wing and they strongly opposed racism, they also used to play at anti racism events too. I hate how this (and other clash songs) is used by EDL thugs who use it as their own to show their message, however it has a completely different meaning! Look at the lyrics carefully, you'll see!

Time England reconvened it's parliament back and declared independence from the UK.

I recon strummer would love the irony. After all he did give it that football chant of a chorus.

Good God, whoever made this video needs to listen to the lyrics. And not just the "this is England" part (it's like people who only hear the "born in the USA" part of the Springsteen song). Clash songs seem to be misunderstood/misappropriated a lot. People think Rock the Casbah is anti-Muslim and US troops used it as some unofficial Gulf War anthem. London Calling was used in Olympics 2012 commercials. Rudy Guiliani used Rudie Can't Fail during his 2008 presidential campaign. WTF is with people?

Love the song, but what the fuck is up with the video? Can't you tell this a song that harshly criticises aspects of English society, not some bollocks patriotic anthem. All the pictures of football fans and british flags and such are irrelevant and irritating.
