£1.2m football pitch boost
ALL-WEATHER football is now on the cards for players in Greenock and Gourock.
The planning board gave permission for 3G - third generation - floodlit pitches at Broomhill, Inverclyde Academy and Drumshantie Road in Gourock.
The school's pitch will be instead of a planned grass park and the other two will replace blaes gravel.
One of the council's sports champions, Councillor Iain McKenzie, visited the Broomhill site to say he was delighted at the three developments.
He recalled: "I remember playing as a boy on this pitch when it was ash.
"So I'm glad to see it's about to be updated to a 21st century surface with modern complementary changing accommodation. Broomhill will see £600,000 of investment in improved facilities. We will spend £470,000 on the all-weather pitch and a further £200,000 on new changing accommodation.
"This will bring the Broomhill pitch into the 21st century in line with the council's strategy for sport."
The councillor said it will increase the number of games that can be booked for Broomhill each week and will include vastly-improved changing facilities.
He added: "These pitches can be booked by teams from any part of Inverclyde.
"Work will start soon on the pitches, so there will be no excuse for people hanging around street corners saying they have nothing to do.
"And under-16 teams don't even have to pay for pitch hire or changing accommodation."
