Scene from Victor Fleming's The Virginian (1929), starring Gary Cooper as The Virginian and Walter Huston as Trampas. Based on Owen Wister's novel and play, this is Gary Cooper's first all-talkie film and a hugely influential Western which put in place the themes, characters, plot and visuals that Westerns would follow for the next 40 years. This scene also contains the famous exchange between The Virginian and Trampas:
Trampas: ...You long-legged son of a...
The Virginian: If you wanna call me that... smile.
Trampas: With a gun against my belly I... I always smile.

2:48-2:52 refutes the popular misconception that Gary Cooper EVER said "Smile when you say that, pod'nuh!"

That was probably way too much leg the girl was showing ( for 1929 standards).
Glad to see that this filmed survived, a lot of films from that era are gone.

I wish westerns were popular again, pure americana. They were always my favorite genre!

Owen Wister's 'The Virginian' was published on May 28, 1902. Novel is considered the first serious western. It was exactly 110 years ago. Congrats, people!

he looks like he plays a role different from all his others: this character of "The Virginian" being a more bold, tough guy sort of westerner that really contrast with a role like Sgt. York or Sheriff Will Kane. and that now famous dialogue!:
HUSTON: you long legged son of a-
COOP: you wanna' call me THAT............SMILE!
Huston: (scoundrel's grin): with a gun against my belly i..........always smile! ha ha ha ha....

It's pretty cool seeing Gary Cooper as a young man. Most of his iconic films like 'Sergeant York' and 'High Noon' came later in his career, so I'm used to seeing a much more aged version of him.
