Quinn Martin went to Fred Silverman saying "I've got William Conrad interested in doing a detective series", Silverman agreed to order a pilot. Reportedly in the middle of showing the completed pilot to Silverman, Martin noticed he looked odd and asked what was wrong. Silverman said, "Who the hell is this fat guy running around, and where the hell's Robert Conrad?" :)
