why are the calves taken from their mothers so early-- aren't they suppose to nurse before eating feed? How do the mothers respond when the calves are taken from them?

After birth, calves are fed colostrum and moved to a hutch to receive personal attention in a controlled setting. They spend their first 2 months in an individual hutch for their health, safety and well-being. Hutches allow each animal their own food and water in a clean environment protected from the germs of other animals. Once the calf is moved, the mother cow can focus on eating/drinking and getting the nutrients and rest she needs to stay healthy. They both thrive in this setting.

The animals on our farm are comfortable, content and healthy. We value their well-being and provide excellent care. I encourage you to visit a dairy farm to see first-hand how dairy farmers care for their cows.
