James Kalm gets off the beaten path and heads to Hunter College's grad student studios just off Time Square to bring viewers along for this momentous exhibition, "Visual Sensations The Paintings of Robert Swain: 1967-2010". Beginning about forty-five years ago, Swain concentrated his energies on exploring the qualities and variations of color. Over this period he's developed a system of nearly 4,900 tints, tones and shades that he employs to create paintings that resonate not only visually, but emotionally as well. These studies, some mural sized, have a legendary status within the painting community and despite being outside the recognized commercial realm, have influenced generations of students and fellow artists. Includes an interview with Matthew Deleget of MINUS SPACE.

  • Thank you James, Fantastic for me to be 'in the room' at Robert Swain's recent exhibitions. I'm a Fine Art Painting student in the U.K. researching contemporary reductive painting, which I got switch onto by your piece on MINUS SPACE at PS1.

    Kind regards.

  • Sqeyres vs the Sqeyres...Jane Square Eyre would laugh...Hahaha!!!

  • holy shit a show worth watching again, finally.

  • at 1st i was thinking the same way as ''eenkjet'' because i know i could have done these on a large format digital printer in 5 mins each....but as a traditional signwriter i know how much time and effort goes into designing and mixing paint colours on this scale, let alone how long it would have taken him to paint them by hand. just the masking up would have been a pain to do. this whole project is mind blowing to me, to say the least!

got any idea of the prices on these pieces please james?
