The japanese movie is based on the first season of a classic science fiction anime TV series from 1974 that was Japan's equivalent to the first Star Trek TV show (and was also inspired by it).

It is one of the first military science fiction anime shows that depicted space battleships and cosmic battles among fleets of spaceships, paving the way for many anime space operas like Gundam, Macross, Legend of Galactic Heroes, Gunbuster and many others.

Many elements from the anime series also served as inspiration for several western science fiction productions like Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica (both the original and the reimagined versions), Babylon 5, Space:Above and Beyond and the later Star Trek series.

It is also known to English-speaking audiences as Space Cruiser Yamato or Star Blazers. In Spanish and Latin American countries it was called Astronave Intrepido ("Starship Intrepid"), Estrellas Luminosas ("Shining Stars"), Viaje a la Última Galaxia ("Voyage to the Final Galaxy") and Nave Anti-Espacial ("Anti-Space Ship"). In Portuguese speaking countries it was called Patrulja Estelar ("Star Patrol") and in Italy it was known as La Corazzata Spaziale Yamato ("Space Battleship Yamato").

@akillerofklngs Subtitles, man, subtitles! What's wrong with your head? The last thing I want is to see senkan yamato featuring a bunch of japanese actors with white surfer boy voices and crap. I'd rather READ the dialogue than listen to that craziness. And, somehow, invariably, translation suffers from all manner of error. Even I catch it and wonder, "who translated this script?!?"
