Soil moisture is the key. The lower it is the hotter it becomes. Green cover always maintains moisture and reduces the impact of heat. Eg ; ecosystems as found in rainforests.

Maybe American farmers in the plains states should be looking into this. Replacing deep tilling to this method could save tons of top soil each year lost to the ol' Miss
