Who was the bad guy in the movie, E.T. The Extraterrestrial? How about District Nine? Sometimes, the villains are obvious, as in Independence Day or Lord of the Rings -
in other flicks, the real bad guy may not be who you think it is. Science Fiction author David Brin talks about aliens - and villainy - in science fiction movies.

  • I think the government are the antagonists in E.T. and Colonel Koobus Venter is the main villain in District 9. :)

  • Interesting and insightful. And I agree with you about District 9 and Alien Nation. When D9 came out I wondered why that comparison wasn't made more often. I wonder, though, if the Alien Nation scenario would have been as believable had the Newcomers looked like the aliens from D9. Food for thought.

I look forward to your thoughts on Avatar. :)

  • It's interesting that, in the Alien series of movies, the bad guys are not the aliens but other people (and, more generally, capitalism/corporatism).

  • Good discussion. I agree that if you look at E.T. The Extraterrestrial impartially, there are no 'bad guys'. However, Spielberg does depict them so that we react emotionally against the government. I guess all stories need an antagonist to drive the plot but I agree, the antagonist doesn't have to be evil or even who we expect.

    Thanks again.
