UCLA's Wushu Team, performing at the 2008 Chinese American Culture Night, Royce Hall, UCLA, Thursday 5/15/08

You know those guys that you see in the club doing martial arts to hip hop music? This is what happens when you put them all on stage.

Yeah, I stole this video then overlayed the real soundtrack over it. It's cause the original one was hard to hear the music over the crowd.

So we performed this at Royce Hall in UCLA during the Chinese American Culture Night. Our coordinator Keith wanted to do something out of the norm. Rather than just do a straight up wushu routine he came with this. Everything you see is the result of his choreography.

And yes, we did it on his birthday =)

Many thanks to the Chinese American Culture Night Staff that allowed us to do this. It was a risk for us to do something outside of our element, but the results were awesome.

If you were wondering the wushu forms that we took it from:
1. Five stance
2. Southern fist
3. Broadsword
4. Three-section staff
5. Spear
6. Mantis/Drunken form

  • oh my god, that is really creative LOL

It is strange but i like it :p

  • thanks

  • Very interesting choreographing....mz hv used up a lot of time creating dis!

But from the view point of a wushu lover,i mz say tht dis is so not wushu though u may succeed in attracting peoples attention.....hope to see 'real wushu' performance in future!:)

  • if it's more of a pure wushu form you want, then look up: "2008 Wushu Collegiates - UCLA Wushu Group Set"

It's the set we did at the Collegiates Tournament this year.

  • that was hot! great job ucla wushu! :)

  • just to clarify for people, the choreo for this show wasnt meant to be solely wushu. if it were, we couldve done it, easily. i decided to combine two things that i really enjoy, wushu and hip hop dance (which oddly enough have more parallels than u would think). id say about 90% of the choreo was taken from "real" wushu forms. the only difference is its put to music and a beat. the other 10% is hip hop and intentionally so, not to be popular, but because i thought it would be an awesome idea.

  • @bn2short12 does it make any difference real wushu is still fake wushu

  • lol, mantis and drunken fist thriller

  • Creative and innovative. Very good demo. Nice to see a group try new things and put it together so well.

  • for my opinion, it was great..it give us a very fresh wushu performance..but hip hop part try to make it short...

  • this was the worst demo ive seen.. hip hop with nan quan? that looked ridiculously retarded... and drunken fist with animals forms?

bad idea in combining hip hop and Michael Jackson "moves" with wushu. Wushu isn't hip hop. Wushu should not be mixed with this kind of shit. Why make something that originally looks good and purposely making it look bad. Horrible mix, bad idea.

  • Thanks for the post. Happy Chinease New Year! Visit my channel for 2009 New Year Performances.

  • Great job!! TO all of you! Amazing mix... a traditional art with a modern track... very creative... lots of work I would imagine... brilliant!!!

  • this was pretty awesome :] especially drunken fist form in the mix with MJ's "thriller"... awesome job!!
