I know this semester some doctors have been helping us students out a bit more, but here's a video I took at my PMC to make sure you can start learning this stuff early and also so you won't miss anything when it comes to the final exam. Next week I will be posting a lower extremity tutorial and also vertebral column. Below is a written description in the order you will be tested on. I hope this helps!!

1) INSPECTION
-make sure gown is uncovering the arm.
(also make sure it is tied in the back)
-check symmetry of each arm by putting patients hands together in front in a "praying" position

2)CAPILLARY REFILL
-as you press fingertips, should return to normal color within 5 seconds

3) TEMPERATURE
-use back of hand, comparative

4) PULSES a)radial b) ulnar c) brachial d) axillary

5) MASSES
-ask "hay dolor" as you go up arm

6) REFLEXES
-for biceps, ask "cierre la mano y azfuerza (to find tendon), mire a otro lado (for all reflexes, so they won't be able to control reflex movement), y relaje (when you have already found tendon)" a) brachioradialis b) biceps c) triceps

7) MEASUREMENTS OF THE ARM
-measure length of entire arm, then measure to mark midpoints of arm and forearm on one side
-measure the other arm and do the same
-measure circumference of fore/arm at points marked

8) MOVEMENTS
-say "Imite lo que yo ago" (so patient can follow what you are doing) -fingers: flex, ext, abd, add, opposition, fist -wrist (hold patients wrists): flex, ext, hyperext, abd, add -elbow (tell pt. to keep elbows to sides during movements): flex, ext, pronation, supination -shoulder: flex, ext, hyperext, abd, add, cirumcumduc, inv rot, ext rot, depr, anteropulsion, retropulsion

Y ES TODO PARA SEGUNDO SEMESTRE! :o) --and of course everything we learned from first semester!--

*Sensibility and movements against resistance are for 3rd semester

Don't forget to practice proper technique and GOOD LUCK!

Words that may help for us non-native Spanish speakers:

shoulders=hombros
wrist= muneca or canilla
elbow= codo
if telling patient to make circles with hands or arms= aga circulos

Hope this helps.
