Freddie Hubbard, the Grammy-winning jazz musician whose blazing virtuosity influenced a generation of trumpet players and who collaborated with such greats as Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins, died Monday, a month after suffering a heart attack. He was 70.

A towering figure in jazz circles, Hubbard played on hundreds of recordings in a career dating to 1958, the year he arrived in New York from his hometown Indianapolis, where he had studied at the Arthur Jordan Conservatory of Music and with the Indianapolis Symphony.

Soon he had hooked up with such jazz legends as Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderley and Coltrane and the rest is history. RIP Freddie, you will not be forgotten.

  • Coorect me if I'm wrong, but the drummer is Roy Haynes, not Art Blakey...

  • Of course it's Roy Haynes. This vid is an excerpt from Art's 70th birthday tribute concert with many guests sitting in, Haynes obviously one of them.

  • Wayne Shorter's solo is unbelievable. What an amazing musician. A true genius. Of course Freddie is great also. Roy swings is ass off.

  • Terrence Blanchard???

    uhhhhhhhh

  • shit bassist go the crap hell away

  • This performance does not do the tune

justice in my opinion. While i get the fact that it's a tribute to Blakey, check out the original recording of the tune on the album "The Big Beat". Along with the

composer,Shorter,Lee Morgan is on trumpet,Bobby Timmons,piano..& Jymie Merritt on bass. The album was recorded

    on Bluenote.

  • This version is too slow and not as energetic as the original recording..which

by the way was made back in 1959 on the

Blue Note album entitled "The Big Beat".

The personnel in that version of The Jazz Messengers along with Wayne Shorter,

were Lee Morgan, trumpet,Bobby Timmons, piano, Jymie Merritt on bass.

  • This version is so much slower and not as energetic as the original recording, which was made in 1959 for Bluenote. Along with Wayne Shorter, the Messengers featured Lee Morgan,Bobby Timmons, and Jymie Merritt on bass.

Check that one out if you care to. The album was titled "The Big Beat". pjt

  • Thats fine! The Messengers did lots of "covers" so thats cool with me!
