A few notes on the Vega Bach Bow
In an article in "Dansk Musiktidskrift" of 1951, Telmányi writes about the construction of the Vega Bach Bow. In the article Telmányi describes his own intentions with his bow (Vega Bach), a short going over the historic development of the modern violin bow (Tourte), and the physical construction of the Vega Bach Bow.
Nowhere in the article does Telmányi claim to know how Bach wanted his Solo Sonatas to sound, Telmányi merely suggests that the sonatas - when or if performed in Bach's time - executed with the use of the more curved violin bow of the time(in Germany), would have sounded, not fully polyphonic, but more polyphonic than the modern performances of today with abrupt playing of the chords.
The fully polyphonic execution of the solo sonatas was Telmányi' own ideal developed through 45 years of performing Bach up to the construction of the Vega Bach Bow. Telmányi simply felt the sonatas were misrepresented when performed with the modern bow, to quote him.
Telmányi' point of view is of course subjective, but fact is he left us with some very different and beautiful recordings of the solo sonatas.
