Elephant seals fighting, mating and cute pups playing.

The seals in the Elephant Seal harem at KEP, on the sub-antarctic island of South Georgia, have been fighting and mating in November. The females once mated leave their three week old pups for good. The pups then snooze on the beaches and play in the shallows, until they leave in a few weeks time. Attached to the South Georgia monthly newsletter at www.sgisland.gs

You are right, the pups play fight within weeks of birth, and then you see the young males also practice fighting before they mature into animals with a real chance of breeding.

are the seals dead when it snowed?

I am happy to say the seals are well adapted to the environment they live in and cope just fine with the blizzards. In fact the snow does not readily melt on their skins as their layer of blubber is so efficient at insulating them.

Can  a i ask, do the pups practice fighting like many other mammals do, like play fighting or is it instinct when they reach 10 years of age and become extremely aggressive for sex?
