When asked to explain this song, Cohen replied that it was "a murmured prayer". Typical Cohen mystique. I chose symbols to represent the meaning it has for me. Some of the images used in this video are a brief reference to the 5 years that Cohen spent secluded in a Zen monastery.
Appears on the albums, "Various Positions" (1984), "The Essential Leonard Cohen" (2002) and "Live in London" (2008)
Jennifer Warnes, often referred to as "the singer's singer", is the female back-up who also did a very successful tribute album to Cohen "Famous Blue Raincoat" (1987).

  • Ahhhh....bonjour, bonjour et bonjour!! Merci pour ton commentaire. :-))

  • What a beautiful song!

Though I am familiar with Jennifer Warnes' Famous blue raincoat (often heared with friends) I must admit I know too little of Cohen's other songs and works.

I was captured by the insinuating monothone melodic line, and of course by the splendid images you chose, Eileen. Thanks again for what you create!

Sorry for not having written for a long time, and I wish a happy New Year to you!

  • @b13ne Delighted to hear from you Bruno! Thanks for all your words. :-)) Eileen

  • Un avant-goût de passer du faire au être...

Très bon choix de chanson et excellents choix d'images, Eileen !!

    Merci beaucoup !! xxx<3

  • Not being one of my Cohen´s favourite, the tribute you pay to the song is like it always is with you: great, classy, admirably serious. The reason it´s not one of my favourites is because there isn´t much melody. The melody he always gave / gives us, in his songs. This sounds me more like recitation but after reading the description you generously provided we can (a little bit) guess this has more to do with some message he wanted to sing, or speak out.

  • a very beautiful song !bravo !

    Happy New Year
