The Barracuda program is scheduled to replace the Rubis-class nuclear-powered attack submarines (SNA) with 6 new-generation submarines, providing the French navy with a powerful asset for the control of maritime areas and the project of naval power.

Boasting unrivalled acoustic discretion at high speed and a listening capacity unaffected by speed, the Barracuda will enjoy an acoustic advantage over all types of adversary.

Equipped with an extensive panoply of information gathering resources, and capable of operating both alone and within an integrated naval force thanks to its discreet communications systems, it represents an ideal tool for crisis management.

Its extensive weapons payload capacity including cruise missiles, in particular, make it a tool of considerable strategic importance for the French navy.

The first Barracuda-class submarine will be delivered in 2017, and the subsequent vessels will be delivered at the rate of one every two years.

The 6 new submarines will be christened Suffren, Duguay-Trouin, Dupetit-Thouars, Duquesne, Tourville and De Grasse.

  • Yes our small rubis class are shrimps ^^ but very reactive and agile nuclear submarine in fight ... and his 2000t in depth with ballast full are "heavy" vs AIP classical sub

  • to make an idea of size, (with ballast full) rubis ssn : 2000t, SNLE-NG "le terrible" (SSBN) 14 000t, barracuda SSN : 5000t , our olds SSBNs "redoutable class" (1971- 2008 : the last was l'inflexible 1985-2008) 8000t (redoutable class have knowed and see the cold war) USS george washington (the first SSBN of history) 7000t, Ohio class 19 000t, akula/typhoon class 48 000t (but he has a very lot of water in his ballast : 21 000t in surface more than the twice weigh a dry of the sub !)

  • Yes barracuda class submarine is an attack nuclear submarine of 5000t weight (with rubis class france has the smallest nuclear submarine in the world with less of 2000t weight but with 5000t weight of the barracuda : it will still be again smallest nuclear submarine in the world but more two times more heavier than the rubis ^^ (when the last rubis class will be withdrawn from service in 15 years : 1 barracuda by two years in 2017 x 6 = nearly from 15-20 years of the end of rubis ssn)

  • @chrisfrenchriviera nope, barracuda class is a SNA, ballistc nuclear missile are only fitted in SNLE (SSBN)
