2010/11 Premier's Awards Regional Finalist -- Lower Mainland
Category: Partnership

The Ministry of Regional Economic and Skills Development partnered with the Ministry of Education to provide school-based supports to the 10,000 immigrant children and youth who enter the B.C. school system each year. This helps to ensure newcomers graduate, establish positive social networks and become integrated into B.C.'s communities.

The commitment of all partners meant complex challenges could be addressed through effective strategies, including:

• Designing a program to meet the wide range of immigrant student needs.
• Developing a partnership between two ministries responsible for different sectors with different stakeholders, with restricted funding.
• Incorporating settlement services in the school system which has its own long-standing organization and mandate.
