"Whats her name?"
"Linley. Originally, Linley Gabrielle Jonas. I dont know if they kept the Linley Gabrielle part, but her last name was definitely not Jonas in the adoption papers. No one knows. It was a private adoption."
Kevin stared into blank space for a moment, so did Frankie. Kevin looked up at dad,
"Does she know about us?"
"Well Kev, I hear shes a fan."
We all rolled our eyes. I explained for Kevin.
"I mean, does she know were her...brothers?"
"If she did, it'd probably be on T.V. by now. Don't you think?"
"True."
I heard Nick sigh, then saw him shake his head slowly.
"Wow. Big news. Huge."
"Tell me bout it Nick."
My reply didn't sound as calm as I wanted it to. Mom and dad were staring at us, waiting for more response.
"Why," Frankie started, "did her mom," he put quotation marks in the air, "e-mail you just now?"
The corner of moms lips started to curve into a smile.
"Well, I hear she wants to be an actress."
Kevin chuckled.
"And by that, I mean seriously. Shes really serious about this."
I raised an eyebrow.
"Auditions?"
"School doesn't permit her to."
"Home-School?"
"Her dad has some issues."
"Agencies?"
"I told you Joe, her dad has issues."
I raised my hands in defeat.
"I give up."
There was another short moment of silence.
"And her mom is thinking of telling her about you. Shes waiting for me to give the go. I wanted you boys to know first."
We all kept silence, not making eye contact with mom. Then, an idea hit me.
"Don't."
Everyone stared at me in disbelief.
"Joe," dad started, "she has the right to-"
"I want to tell her myself. Well go to her school. Then, it'll be a surprise. And shell gain popularity points."
I finally looked dad in the eye, and for the first time in the conversation, I smiled. Frankie gave a little chuckle at my last statement.
"Okay. Ill tell her mom tomorrow. Get prepared boys. Your flying halfway across the country."
Kevin, Frankie, Nick and I all laughed.
"Been there done that."
Kevin gave another laugh to his own comment.
"Well," dad raised an eyebrow, "did I mention she goes to an all girls school?"
My jaw dropped to the ground, and I'm pretty sure my brothers did too.
"Well," Frankie said, standing up, "may you rest in peace my brothers. This is suicide."
Frankie and mom walked upstairs, then dad headed towards the garage. We heard him mumble to himself,
"Now if only I could find out what happened with my jackhammer."
The three of us waited until it was safe. Then we all bursted out laughing and rolling on the floor.
"Escape for it? "
Kevin asked, when he was back to himself.
"Duh."
