In this video I show the Mr. Backup Z64 as well as some complete Atari 2600 games I just picked up.

The Z64 was manufactured in Taiwan and was distributed in the US by Harrison Electronics. The system is based around an i386 compatible computer; the Z64 BIOS is actually an image of a FAT filesystem, and it boots an MS-DOS clone internally. This model, the HW3, simplified the design in order to lower the price to 299.00 from $399.00US.

The Z64 is extremely easy to use. It has an LCD display that you can use to load a game before the N64 is powered on, or to load a boot emulator or back up the cart in the slot. In addition, if you turn the N64 on before loading a game, the Z64 has a nice BIOS menu that runs as a N64 program, like the CD64 BIOS. In this case, you have a small advantage over the CD64, since you are not forced to operate with a 6102 boot cart only; you can choose whether to use the BIOS or operate the LCD menu depending on what you want to do.

In the Z64 menu, you can set up options for each individual game, such as what boot chip it uses, slowdown function, tell it to redirect controller pack saves to the zip disk (for transfer to PC or copy to friends), or to PAL-fix it.

  • Wtf, the N64 trying to compete with the Genesis in a "who have the biggest add-ons" duel... hahaha

Such a nice device, I would like to find one of those.... Also, nice score with the Atari games man, is always hard to find boxed copies....

  • @FenderLesPaul1989 Seriously. If I ever get the Dr. V64, just wait to see the massive tower. The V64 reminds me of a storm trooper helmet for some reason.

  • your hot

  • @Spazmify I heard that you could, first of all, make a backup of your own game, then put the disc in your PC, find it, then try putting your roms in that exact same directory. I don't know if that'll work but you can try, the game should be a single file like this, Super Mario 64.z64

  • Damn! I saw a golden colored one at a thrift store!!! If only I knew!!!! It's probably gone now... I'll check tomorrow :P

  • There is a couple of modified "bioses" floating around for the Z64 which adds hd and compact flash support if you ever would want faster loading times and more storage.
