Youtube audio copyright strikes again! Sorry that I had to change the Nightwish song.

A fanmade video based off the second book in Philippa Gregory's Wideacre series - The Favored Child.

***Spoilers***
Since these books have been out since the early 90's, I do not feel too bad about giving a plot summary. If you do not wish to know the plot, simply don't read this little blurb. But for those of you who are confused by this video, I'll try to clear things up a bit.

The book is part of the Wideacre Trilogy - Wideacre, The Favored Child and Meridon. A bit odd to start with the second book but I couldn't find a red-headed actress to play the girl from the first book.

The story centers around the 18th century estate of Wideacre (title of the first book) where the teenaged Beatrice Lacey longs to inherit her family estate but cannot because she is a girl. Beatrice is charming and headstrong, beautful and willful (think Becky Sharp/Scarlet O'Hara). She is also a sociopath.

Wideacre choronicles the life of a ruthless woman who is literally willing to kill for her estate and will stop at nothing - not even murder - to win what is rightfully hers. If graphic sexuality and incest are taboo for you, I strongly encourage you not to read Wideacre. Don't mean to spoil too much, but this book is NOT for the faint of heart.

Now that the little background is out of the way - THIS story picks up from the viewpoint of Beatrice's daughter, blonde and dreamy Julia Lacey who feels an immediate kinship with the land. She is raised on the estate with her cousin Richard MacAndrew as they are both destined to be joint heirs to Wideacre. However, she soon begins to notice that something is happening to Richard, he evinces violent mood swings and bouts of temper and the villagers don't like him. As time passes, Richard becomes more and more power-hungry and concocts a plan to marry her and take full control over her estate. Thwarting her desperate attempt to escape him by an engagement to another man (James Fortescue), Richard traps Julia into a loveless marriage where even more horrible secrets unfold. Julia is trapped in a nightmare where the only resolution appears to end in death - but will it be Richard's, or her own?

Now, if I haven't completely confused you or turned you off by the controversial subject matter, I encourage you to read the books. The style of writing is exquisitely captivating.

Clips taken from the BBC's Dracula starring Sophia Myles and Dan Stevens.

  • Looking at your videos, I'd say we have about the same reading tastes!

Can you make a video of Meridon?

  • Unfortunately, no. To be honest, I really didn't like that book at all, and I found the main character cold and lifeless. Plus, a nineteenth century circus is not a prevalent theme in your average period drama.

I have something currently in the works... though I can't promise a definitive time since I don't have time to make vids while I'm at school, only once in awhile when I'm home (that's why I haven't really posted in awhile).

  • Wow. Wow. I watched the whole video thinking the James actor was the Richard actor, but then I figured it out at the end...with that cleared up, AMAZING video, really faithful to the book! Do more! Do more!

  • Most of my videos are based on books I've been addicted to, additonally incorporating some of my favorite movies to represent the characters. Along with The Favored Child and Wideacre, I have a slew a videos posted for Libba Bray's A Great and Terrible Beauty trilogy and Anna Godbersen's "The Luxe series." If you are interested in period drama, I strongly encourage you to check them out. The vids are only a humble shadow compared to the books.

  • Wow, you've picked such an awesome girl for Julia! Great vid :)

  • Thank you. Despite the fact that I've always envisioned Ralph as a Heathcliff-type, I wasn't too fond of the girl I had to use for Beatrice, primarily because she's not a red-head. But Sophia Myles is so pretty, in a soft, gentle sort of way - she looks exactly like I imagined Julia looking.

  • I loved Wideacre, though I was surprised I was allowed to read it when I was 13 and I thought the Favoured Child was even better. Meridon was disappointing

  • Hey love the video!!!

can you tell me what movies its from?????

  • I love Sophia Myles! She is amazing.

Thank you for making these. I read the series and I love them! I always felt so bad for Julia in the books because [SPOILER] of what Richard does. She never really achieves happiness... It's quite sad.

  • i loved the favored child. i really felt bad for julia because she really didn't know what to do. i totally hated richard especially at the end.

  • I agree with you about Meridon. She is such a cynical bitch that I never found myself liking her at any point in the book. Also, I found it unlikely that a double-incest baby such as her wouldn't have some kind of deformity in body/mind. Just saying, she had biology working against her.

  • *Can't wait for Meridon.

    Lol!

I have to know that song. Gaaah. It's really nice! :)

  • Hey!! GREAT video. It's just how I see it. Like it's really from the book. :D

I finished Wideacre, and I think it was really great, but a little disturbing. Lol. I'm 60 pages more or less in TFC, and I really like this one better than the first book. Haha. Can't for Meridon.

I hope you make a video of Meridon!! Even if I still haven't read it. Loool.

Btw, what's the name of the song in this vid??

  • Lovely video. What's the song?
