http://www.woodlands.co.uk/ Want to make charcoal? What is a charcoal burner? Where does barbecue charcoal come from? Woodlands TV visit a charcoal burn using a ring kiln. They look at the sources of wood, moving the chimneys, what happens inside a charcoal burner, and grading the charcoal. An atmospheric film with lots of smoke and steam in a woodland setting.

  • Very good explanation of the proses thanks.

  • @38MarcW Thanks for commenting and watching Woodlands TV

  • It seems that you are limiting the number of vents letting steam out. Why is that please? Why not have more vents?

It would have liked to see how you loaded the wood and have an inside look at the kiln.

    Thank you for the video.

I think John Westcott explains at the beginning he wants to slow the burning down. More vents would speed the process up too much. It would have been good to film the other points you raise but he was in the middle of a 10 hour burn and we had about 10 other films to make that day. Thanks for watching

  • if you invert the kiln and catch the "steam" in another container you can catch the oils from the wood which has many uses...

Intriquing idea to invert the kiln, but would you be able to do it with one this size?

    Thanks for watching

  • @WOODLANDSTV Do you know where i could find some plans to build one?

  • @WOODLANDSTV i know this one is smaller than the one you work with but it should give you an idea...

  • @WOODLANDSTV i guess you wouldnt have to invert it with the stacks already on the bottom. i guess all you would have to do is make something that the resins can drain off into...
