Question: I have a client. Her partner has just died. She considered that they were in a de-facto relationship. They had been together for 4 1/2 years. They shared expenses and holidays etc However, they didnt live in the same house. This was because she worked as prison-guard and he was an ex-inmate. Her 19 year old son was uncomfortable with him living with them. He thought that his past might at some point catch up with him. This may affect his mothers job. Privately, I felt that he didnt want an unsavoury character in the family home. My client provided considerable care to her partner in the last months of his life and was with him in hospital when he died.
