Williamsburg Homes for Sale - Call 757-561-0642 for FREE Homes for Sale Information | Tour the fines of Williamsburg's Homes for Sale by contacting a licensed real estate agent.

Founded in 1699 at Middle Plantation, Williamsburg became the captial of colonial Virginia. Name after King William III of Great Britain, the capital was moved from Jamestown at the request of citizenery of the colony.

Williamsburg, the first planned American city, was laid out by Governor Francis Nicholson. Williamsburg is laid on a grid pattern with the central street exactly one mile long, the Capital at one end and the College of William and Mary at the other. The Courthouse, Governor's Palace, and Power Magazine sit at the halfway point.

The young capital quickly became the colony's center for politics, religion, education, economics and social life for Virginia. Today, Williamsburg is still a center for history, education, and social life. The College of William and Mary keep its traditional name, but is truly a major liberal arts university.

The colonial capital of Virginia has survived because Richmond became the third and current capital of Virginia in 1780. This moved allowed the survival of many 18th century homes, historic building, and other real estate.

Today, Williamsburg is a major destination for tourism. The Colonial Williams Foundation maintains and preserves the colonial capital. Busch Garden, Water Country, and Great Wolf Lodge are major tourist attractions. Numerous facilities, such as Kings Mill's PGA championship golf course play supporting roles in Williamsburg identity as a tourist destination.

An unexpected turn in the areas progress is the development of Williamsburg real estate into a major attraction for those seeking relief from the climatic extremes of the northern and southern state. Williamsburg is now also a retirement destination.
