This is the final major step in making piston rings. They are cut and then a shim inserted in the gap to expand the ring. It is then heat treated at a temp of 1472 deg. F and held there for 15 minutes, then allowed to cool slowly at room temp. Once cool, the shim is removed and you have a springy piston ring. Finish deburing and it's ready to put on your piston. Look closely and you can see the ring on the steel plate in the bottom of the furnace which is being brought up to temp. I had the lid off long enough to get this video.
