Excerpts from a presentation given by author Michael Argetsinger and historian William Green about the 1958, 1959, 1960 Formula Libre Races and the 1961 Formula One Race at Watkins Glen, NY. This is part of the ongoing year long celebration for the 50th Anniversary of the first Formula One race at Watkins Glen. Next presentation April 16, 2011. Admission is free.
Very nice overview. Attended many Glen GPs from the early 60s on. I remember standing near Jimmy Clark when he won in '66 or '67 (he won both years) and noticed that he was a fingernail biter. So much for calm and collected post-race nerves. Years later in 1979 in my rompin' stompin' Showroom SCCA class Rabbit, I started 26th in a 10-lap race there and managed to finish 5th, in my first race at the Glen. Yay!
